Belle Fourche:

Belle Fourche (French for "beautiful fork") was named by French explorers referring to the confluence of what is now known as the Belle Fourche and Redwater Rivers and the Hay Creek. Beaver trappers worked these rivers until the mid-19th century, and Belle Fourche became a well known fur trading rendezvous point.

Bison was platted in 1907, and named after the American bison which were once numerous in the area.

Buffalo was established in 1909. It was named for the large herds of buffalo that once roamed the area.

Named after the dead trees found in its gulch and founded after the rise of the Black Hills Gold Rush, Deadwood is a place chock full of history.

Hot Springs was founded as a frontier health spa to capitalize on springs of warm mineral waters rising in Fall River Canyon.

Lead was founded as a company town by the Homestake Mining Company, which ran the nearby Homestake Mine.  Named for the leads or lodes of gold ore.
